Trendway Scholarships

Through the George and Lucile Heeringa Scholarship Program, Merit Scholarships are available for the benefit of local students in our community.  These scholarships were created by Trendway’s founding proprietors to assist with the higher education expenses of area young people.  “My parents always placed a strong emphasis on education” says Don Heeringa, Chairman of Trendway Corporation, based in Holland Michigan.  “Through these scholarships, we are able to honor their memory and the values they held dear, as well as encourage and support young men and women as they advance their knowledge.”  Scholarship applicants are reviewed and selected by the Selection Committee, which consists of High School Guidance Counselors from the six local high schools. Trendway Corporation, an office furniture manufacturer in West Michigan, is the administrator of the George and Lucile Heeringa Scholarship program.

All scholarships are required to submit an essay outlining topics such as: academic strengths, weaknesses, why the student is applying for the award, what field of study is being considered, and how this relates to personal and career objectives. Scholarship winners are selected on the basis of scholastic aptitude, leadership abilities, community involvement, volunteer activities and their written essay. To be eligible for consideration, all application information must be complete.

All applications will be available during the month of February/March.  Applications must be postmarked by March 26, 2021 to be eligible.  The Selection Committee is firmly committed to the policy that all selections are made without regard to race, creed, color, national origin, sex, age, religion, disability, marital status, height, weight, or veteran status. A panel of outside educators makes the final award selection.  Award selections will be made by May 14.  All scholarship applicants will be notified before June 1st as to the status of their application.

Grants made to the program recipients are payable from the George and Lucile Heeringa’s Charitable Trust.  The recipient of the scholarship grant must supply evidence of College/University acceptance and proof of enrollment.  Additionally, proof of a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or better, must be provided, between semesters, to remain eligible for the scholarship.
